By now you’ve probably donned at least a sweatshirt and thought to yourself “oh no, winter is on it’s way.” Don’t be sad – it’s hockey season! Playing hockey keeps you warm; not just while you’re playing but also at night when you need it most. Instead of shivering in bed you can smile and gently nod off to sleep with dreams of the goal you scored or the perfect pass you got from a teammate. In addition, it’s scientific fact that dreaming of hockey helps you lose weight while you sleep! Ok, the research is limited but you can help us prove the theory. Don’t know how to play? We are here to help you. You played some other sport and think hockey is expensive? Well, how much money are you spending on that gym membership you never use? Cancel it and join us. The first Freeze game has been played and the next ones are quickly approaching. Don’t miss a minute of the action! Each team’s game and practice schedules are set and can be located on this website. The most up-to-date game schedules can always be found by going to www.UWHL.org and clicking on the respective team level.

If you are interested in joining our organization, we are still accepting a few players at the novice and intermediate levels. Don’t know how to skate? Don’t have the equipment? We can help! We specialize in teaching beginner players how to skate and how to play the game of ice hockey. Contact info@philadelphiafreeze.org to set up a time to try us out.

First Practice

It’s mid-September and that only means one thing… Hockey practice is starting!

The first practices are scheduled and all new and interested players should come out and get a feel for the ice. We use the first practices to not just get new girls geared up but to also assess abilities and roster each player on the appropriate team. So, if you are ready to wear our team colors, sign up for a USA Hockey membership and bring the confirmation number with you (required for every player, ref, & coach). If you are unsure if hockey is for you just bring proof of health insurance in lieu of your USA Hockey membership . We have a trial period of 3 practices for $60 which will go towards your dues if you decide to play.

The 2011-2012 season is set to start but first the players have to sign contracts and medical contact forms. The place for this is the preseason party. Come on out, join the club if you haven’t already, and celebrate the start of another great Philadelphia Freeze season. We have four teams (each at different ability levels) so we will find a place for you, novice to expert. There are only two weeks left until the first practice so get your skates sharpened and tape your stick – it’s hockey time!

The 2010-2011 game schedules for all three UWHL teams have been posted. Definitely pay attention to where your home games are this year, as we’re splitting our home ice between University of Penn and Flyers SkateZone Pennsauken. See you on the ice!

Red, White, and Blue!

This year the Philadelphia Freeze organization is fielding three UWHL teams: one each in the Red, White, and Blue divisions. Rosters have been turned in to the league and will be posted here shortly. If you’re interested in playing and haven’t signed up yet, please let us know asap! The White team (C level) in particular could use a few more full-time players.

We had a great turn-out for the Welcome meeting. Monday 9/20 at 7:15pm we have our first practice! Dust off your gear and head out on the ice!

Excited to see new and returning players. Maybe I should get my skates sharpened….

UWHL All-Star Game Photos

I’ve posted the photos I took at this past Saturday’s UWHL All-Star Game, played for the first time at the Wachovia Center, to Flickr. Congratulations to Steph Geiger (#5 Orange) and Debbie Lamparter (#52 Black) from the Blue team, and to Meghan Gallagher (#24 Orange) from the White team, for being chosen as all-stars.

Indy vs. Chicks with Sticks

While we may have lost 2-1 to the pink-clad Chicks with Sticks from Kennett Square, we had a great game! The Indy team had quite a day.

DK finally let loose her amazing shot and scored. Yergey had a great game in goal (I think you should warm up with your superman cape on more often). Greta received a penalty for knocking a show-off on her butt. Jill scored a goal, which the referee seemed to have missed, so it didn’t count, but we know the truth….. We even pulled our goalie at the end, which always makes me nervous, but in a good way. Most importantly, we had fun! And we learned a few things.

One thing I learned: it is so much fun to have fans! We had a whole section cheering us on. You guys rocked!!!! Thanks to everyone for coming out to watch us play!
