Welcome
to Philadelphia Freeze
Women's Ice Hockey!
The Philadelphia Freeze Women’s Hockey club has been in existence for over 25 years and has grown from one team playing at the University of Pennsylvania Class of 1923 rink in Philadelphia to 4 teams using 2 different home rinks and 3 different practice rinks across the metropolitan region. The mission of the Freeze is to offer a fun and valuable ice hockey experience to women. The organization is player run. All coaches are volunteers and players from each of the teams serve on the governing board.
The Philadelphia Freeze Women’s Ice Hockey Club consists of 4 teams all of which play and practice during a “traditional” schedule from September to March give or take a few weeks. The teams are:
Depending on the number of participants interested in the MAWHL or UWHL team(s), skill evaluations will occur to limit roster size. Traditionally, the Independent Team does not have evaluations and is open to anyone interested in playing a less completive and time consuming schedule. The skill level is not defined as there are often players on the team who are new to the sport as well as seasoned players, allowing new players to learn from the experienced players and providing a fun and valuable experience.
Costs vary per team depending on ice costs and the number of practices and games in a season. The goal is to keep fees at the lowest possible level to cover costs only. The Independent team costs are the lowest of the 4 teams as the schedule is more flexible and the number of games can be decided by the members of the team verses a league that requires a certain number of games per season. Playing in non-league tournaments is an option for all teams and costs and arrangements for the tournaments are handled by the interested players verses the board of the club.
The Freeze anticipates and encourages open discussion with and between all players to improve the experience for all. It is also anticipated that all players will work together to meet the obligations of the teams and the club. This can be as simple as paying dues on time, helping with recruitment and retention to working on a committee set up by the board to help refine processes, club decisions or ideas for expansion or consolidation.
